The Artha Panchaka, written in the 13th century AD by the celebrated Pillai Lokacharya, represents the essence of the Srivaishnava Sampradhaya. It forms one of the 18 Rahasyas or Secret doctrines bequeathed to us by the author and deals with five supreme truths or principles that each liberation-seeking soul needs to comprehend

So what does the book say about? It answers the basic but important questions every person who believes in God would ask himself every now and then:

Who are we? (Sva-svarupa); Who is the Lord? (Para-svarupa); What’s our goal? (Purusaartha-svarupa); The ways to attain the goal. (Upaya-svarupa); The hindrances in attaining our Goal. (Virodhi-svarupa)

Visishtadvaita talks about Tattva, Hita and Purushartha, and these three are contained in the Artha Panchakam. Tattva consists of an understanding of Jiva and also an understanding of Paramatma, and so there are two aspects to Tattva. Hita is the way to reach the goal. Purushartha is the goal to be reached. The goal is Paramatma. The means is also Paramatma
