Kitab Al-Umm is the best book that is the legal guide (fiqh) of the Shafi'i Madhhab in Indonesia, this book covers various kinds of legal discussions (fiqh), and is the initial phase of the development of hadith science into ushul fiqh as a scientific discipline. This book is also the main reference for the Syafi'iyyah fiqh experts in compiling their works to date. This book is summarized to make it easier for readers to describe the fiqh methodology of Imam Shafi'i.

In the book of Al-Umm, al-Shafi'i uses a lot of the hadiths of the Prophet as the basis for his part in taking legal istinbat. As a scholar who was given the title Nasir al-Sunnah, of course al-Shafi'i has filtered the hadiths used. In this Book of Al-Umm will also be presented the footing or foundation of Imam Syafii rahimahulloh-in issuing various opinions, especially in matters of fiqh Worship and Muamalah, according to the level of his scientific ability.
