The book Hilyatul Auliya' is an Islamic encyclopedia which describes the history and biographies of the previous salaf scholars in detail. By presenting hadiths and atsars along with their sanad, Abu Nu'aim Al-Ashbahani recounts the life history of generations of Islam, starting from the generation of companions, tabi'in, tabi' at-tabi'in and so on in an authentic manner.

The systematic presentation of this book is considered a classic, because all the stories and biographies of the Salaf Ulama here are narrated using complete hadiths and atsars, so that the validity and authenticity of the stories can be accounted for and very original.
