About Induction Motor
The working principle of 3-phase induction motor with interactive animations
This application describes the principle of operation of 3-phase induction motor with the aid of simulation and interactive animations, the aim of this application is not only to give you knowledge and understanding about induction motors, but the main goal is to give you full understanding by trying by yourself and observing the results until it make sense to you.
The application is divided into 12 sections:
1) BASIC CONCEPTS: giving a brief description for electromagnetic laws that are necessary to understand theory of operation of induction motors.
2) MOTOR CONSTRUCTION: a quick overview of main parts that induction motor consists from.
3) PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION: showing in detailed animations how does 3-phase electrical source that supplied to induction motor is converted into mechanical rotation.
4) NUMBER OF POLES: showing in detailed animations how does changing number of poles affect motor speed and torque.
5) SLIP: explaining the concept of slip and how can it be use to express the speed of motor.
6) EQUIVALENT CIRCUIT: describing the equivalent circuit of induction motor and what does each of it's elements indicate, also providing a simulation model in which you can change any of motor elements and observe it's effect in the equivalent circuit.
7) MOTOR TESTING: describing the three tests of induction motor that are used to estimate the parameters of motor.
8) POWER FLOW: showing the flow of power inside induction motor from the input electrical power and the losses that are occurring until it is converted into the output mechanical power that rotates the motor.
9) TORQUE-SPEED CURVE: showing torque equation of induction motor and how it was derived, and torque-speed curve and the effect of changing of each element on the curve, also providing a model in which you can change each element yourself and see it's effect.
10) SPEED CONTROL: going more in depth through torque speed curve and see how does the motor react in each part of the curve and how does it react with changing of loads, and the methods of changing motor speed by changing each element of the motor and how can we change these elements. There is also a model in which you can change each element and see how does motor speed react with that it.
11) MOTOR STARTING: explaining with animations the methods that are used in motor starting to avoid high inrush current and providing a model in which you can test each of these methods.
12) MOTOR CALCULATOR: a calculator for estimating full load current and full load torque and cable size.
Note that all models provided are for learning purposes not to give an actual motor model, the actual models can vary according to motor operating conditions.
