A mineral is a naturally occurring, homogeneous, inorganic crystalline solid with a definite chemical composition. Accordingly, we can list the properties of minerals as follows:

• It occurs naturally.

• Any part has the characteristics of the whole.

• It has a specific chemical formula.

• It is solid and rarely liquid.

• It is inorganic.

The subject of mineralogy is limited in this respect as it includes naturally occurring substances. Chemical compounds obtained synthetically in laboratories with the advancement of technology are not considered minerals. Solid substances in the form of these artificial compounds are not found naturally in nature. Therefore, they cannot be formed under natural conditions. Such solids may be called "artificial minerals." Such artificial minerals have similar crystalline structures as natural minerals.

As observed in the nature of experimental studies of minerals, their formation conditions occur under specific physicochemical conditions (such as under certain temperature and pressure and the chemical state of the environment). From this, we understand that one of the aims of mineralogy is to learn the chemical and physical structure of the earth's crust formed by minerals, know the history of the earth's crust, and benefit from underground resources.

Minerals have a specific chemical composition. A chemical formula then expresses each mineral. The chemical formulas of minerals are usually fixed. However, it can change with certain rules within certain limits. Minerals that rarely occur in the form of pure elements (gold, silver, copper, etc.) are the products of natural physicochemical events occurring in the earth's crust.

Another feature of minerals is that they are inorganic. Substances such as petroleum, coal, fossils, and resins found in the earth's crust are not covered by mineralogy. However, there are also organic minerals such as amber, albeit rare.

The fact that minerals are solid indicates that they have a regular atomic internal structure. When the external structures of the mineral crystals are examined, it is seen that they have a regular geometric external shape. In the same way, it is seen that the internal structures are smooth. There are also types of minerals that are liquid, such as "mercury."
