The Ministry of Social Development is the ministry concerned with social work, providing comprehensive social security, coordinating social services for all citizens, providing in-kind and cash assistance, supervising charities and voluntary bodies in Jordan in accordance with laws and regulations, supervising juveniles and monitoring the behavior of delinquents among them, in addition to its role in child and maternity care. and family affairs, combating homelessness and beggary, and it has a role in combating unemployment and reducing poverty by financing small projects for poor families, in addition to the role of the Ministry of caring for people with special needs and providing them with appropriate services.

After the migration to the cities from the countryside began in 1948, following the Nakba, a Department of Social Affairs was created to address the social problems of Jordanian immigrants. In 1953, the department was transferred to the Ministry of Health and included new tasks for it, such as providing assistance to the poor and taking care of juveniles. Then in 1956 it was annexed to the Ministry of Labor under the name of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour, then its name was changed in 1975 to become the Ministry of Social Development and Labor, and in 1979 the ministry separated from the Ministry of Labor to become the Ministry of Social Development. Social work began in Jordan voluntarily, through charitable societies, which were formed in the period from 1912-1935, under the Ottoman Associations Law; For apparently social reasons (social solidarity). After the establishment of the state at the beginning of the second decade of the twentieth century, many charitable societies were registered under the Jordanian Associations Law of 1936, with the Prime Ministry.
