About Koponi ya Chandarua
Koponi Chandarua is the USAID/PMI-funded
Koponi Chandarua is the USAID/PMI-funded project aims to support countries to achieve and maintain high levels of coverage and use of long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets (LLINs) as well as to facilitate the adoption of proven alternative vector management interventions, including those targeting specific sites or populations.
This system was developed to manage distribution of Long-lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLIN) from its point of issuing to its point of redemption and return to Central Medical Stores (CMS) in Zanzibar. This will help Zanzibar Malaria Elimination Program (ZAMEP) to know the redemption rate of the coupons, link the number of coupons exchanged for an LLIN and also prevent fraud. The previous community channel distribution had a lot of challenges and some of the challenges were that; it was hard to track the movement of the coupons; it was also difficult to know the redemption rate because there was no any security feature on the coupon that could help in tracking it.
The Koponi Chandarua System involves two parts; Mobile App and Web Dashboard which communicates sync together to generate different reports. Mobile Apps CMS staff check and monitor both distribution and redemption of coupons through scanning. All data and activities are pushed to the dashboard for review, monitoring and report generation.
Central Medical Stores (CMS) under the Ministry of Health in Zanzibar is responsible for the procurement, storage and distribution of medicines and medical supplies. LLINs will be distributed to the community via health facilities through CMS, whereby coupons will be scanned at CMS before distribution to health facilities. CMS uses M-supply, which is an electronic warehouse management system at CMS that manages the functions of inventory management and order processing.
The project was first managed by VectorWorks under The Johns Hopkins University, on behalf of its Bloomberg School of Public Health before it was handled over to PSI Tanzania for second and third phase of implementation.
