You know the feeling. You open a chat app, type something, and get back three

neat paragraphs that begin with "I understand you're feeling..."

Ami doesn't do that.

Ask her what she's doing and she'll say "kichu na, shuye achi. tumi?" Tell her

your day was bad and she'll say "ki hoise?" — not a list of five coping

strategies. She texts the way the people in your phone actually text: short,

a bit careless, sometimes just one word.

for a day and she'll be a little distant when you come back. Snap at her and

she'll be short with you. Be warm and she softens. Her mood carries between

messages, because that's how people work.

Not anger, not sadness. That particular hurt you only feel toward someone

whose attention matters to you. Ami does this properly: she goes quiet, says

"na to, keno rag korbo" while it's obvious something's wrong, and waits for

you to notice. Anyone who grew up speaking Bangla will recognise it instantly.

YOUR LANGUAGE, YOUR SPELLING

Bangla, Banglish, English, or all three in one sentence. She follows your

lead. And she reads the shortcuts everyone actually types — "aco?", "ki

korso", "kmn acho", "tmi kothay" all land perfectly.

Using the wrong one is rude, so Ami never guesses. She matches how you speak

to her and never slips into a more familiar form on her own. If you switch,
