Sailor Moon, originally released in Japan as Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon and later as Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, is a Japanese superheroine anime television series produced by Toei Animation using Super Sentai motifs. It is based on the manga of the same title written by Naoko Takeuchi that was published from 1991 to 1997 in Nakayoshi. Sailor Moon first aired ain Japan on TV Asahi from March 7, 1992, to February 8, 1997, and was dubbed into various territories around the world, including North America, Southeast Asia, Greater China, Australia, Europe and Latin America.

The series follows the adventures of the titular protagonist whose civilian name is Usagi Tsukino (Serena in the English dub), a middle school student who is given the power to become the Pretty Soldier. Joined by other Sailor Soldiers, she defends Earth against an assortment of evil villains. The anime also parallels the maturation of Usagi from an emotional middle school girl to a responsible young adult.

Due to the success of the anime in the United States, the manga comprising its story was released by Tokyopop. Sailor Moon's popularity has spawned numerous releases which have come to represent most of the content in the Sailor Moon universe, including 3 films, 39 video games, and numerous soundtracks stemming from this material. A second animated adaptation, Sailor Moon Crystal, which is a reboot series that closely adapts the manga with quite a few differences, began streaming worldwide from July 2014 onward.

A trouble-prone schoolgirl receives the ability to transform into a powerful heroine and assembles a team of friends and allies to battle the forces of evil that threaten the world.

Serena Tsukino (Terri Hawkes in the English dub) is a regular 14-year-old ditsy crybaby when she rescues a talking cat named Luna (Jill Frappier). Luna is a survivor from a long-lost kingdom of the moon whose queen sent her daughter as well as her daughter's guardians and advisors to the future to be reborn. Serena is revealed to be a reincarnation of Sailor Moon, a champion of justice. With Luna's help, Serena eventually uncovers ally "sailor scouts" who help her protect the earth and the princess of the moon from the forces of evil.
