Reactable Wallpaper

Reactable is an electroacoustic electronic musical instrument created by a group of European developers from the Institute of Audiovisual Technologies in Barcelona. Uses the material user interface. A musical instrument requires precise coordination of movements.

Multi-touch a technology that allows the touchscreen to recognize several simultaneous clicks, has been developed at the University of Toronto and Bell Labs since the early eighties but mostly in the form of one-time test models.

The Wall Piano is a multimedia installation by Hon Lam Lee a graduate of the Faculty of Interactive Design at the University of London. This installation works like a musical instrument - during pounding, piano sounds are heard on the wall. The secret lies in several directional microphones, recognizing strokes in the wall and of course in special software that converts the location of the blow into the right note.

Reactable the closest relative of Khan's interfaces is a surface illuminated from below which determines the location of objects on it and reacts to their movements. The device was invented in Barcelona Universitat Pompeu Fabra and is now being developed by other scientific groups. The principle of operation is similar to any touchscreen smartphone or tablet only the surface reacting to touch at times more therefore several people can play Reactable at the same time. Reactable is in active development and is not produced serially and the general public was first introduced at the American festival Coachella where Bjork acted as part of her tour in support of the latest album. Reactable like the orchestra of wind instruments is a key element of her show.

One of the first serial multi-touch devices was the JazzMutant Lemur a touch-sensitive tablet-screen in which musicians and video artists can independently draw and customize their own user interface. The revolution did not happen because the device costs more than two thousand euros but the direction of the movement of technical thought was determined later JazzMutant released Dexter a device for professional musicians.
