After settling in Moab, in ten years, all the men in the life of Naomi died. In the usual scheme of life, Naomi's family was supposed to grow into at least eight people by the time she went back to Bethlehem.

Simple maths gives us the original four, plus two daughters-in-law, plus at least the first-borns of Ruth and Orphar. Instead, all the possible additions got gobbled by a nameless curse, and the devastation left Naomi with a clingy Ruth. Depopulation.
