Lumen

Lumen is a light-metering bench for film photographers. It answers one question, the

one that decides a negative: you have a reading, so where on the Zone scale does it

belong?

PRACTISE THE PLACEMENT

The Bench hands you a scene and a meter and asks for a decision. Place the reading,

commit, and see 👀 how the frame lands. A clean 🧼 placement is judgment, not arithmetic —

so the ones you get right are saved and handed back to you later to prove they stuck.

THE ZONE SCALE, EXPLAINED

Every zone is an entry with the reason ❓ behind it: Zone VII as highlight with detail,

Zone VIII as bright and near-textureless, Zone IX as the clip line, the 18% grey card

the meter is built around, and where light and dark skin actually sit — Zone VI and

Zone IV. Read the scale as a working tool 🛠️ rather than a diagram 📊.

WHAT THE FILM CAN HOLD

An emulsion reference with the number 🔢 that matters: latitude in stops. Portra 400 at

nine stops forgives what Provia 100F at five and a half will not, and each stock says

so plainly alongside its ISO. The ones worth a longer read carry a full article.

HOW THE CANON WAS METERED

Famous Frames takes photographs everyone knows and shows the metering behind them —

Adams metering the moon at sixty miles an hour for Moonrise, Weston giving a pepper

four hours of light, Lange working with the available light in a lean-to tent, a river

of Zone VIII running through a Zone III valley in the Tetons.
