The 2014 Hong Kong protests were sit-in protests in Hong Kong involving mass civil disobedience that began in September 2014. Also known as the Umbrella Revolution or Umbrella Movement,[10][11] the protests began after the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPCSC) came to a decision regarding proposed reforms to the Hong Kong electoral system. The decision was widely[12] seen to be highly restrictive, and tantamount to Communist Party control over which candidates would be allowed to present themselves to the Hong Kong electorate.

「雨傘革命」（Umbrella Revolution），又稱「雨傘運動」（Umbrella Movement）或「遮打革命」，廣義而言是指2014年9月下旬因中國共產黨控制下的全國人民代表大會常務委員會通過極高門檻的香港政改決定草案，而引發的一連串爭取「真普選」的抗爭行動，由學界發起的罷課及「佔領中環」行動正式啟動；狹義而言則是指由9月28日警方罕有出動87枚催淚彈驅散聲援市民，令金鐘、旺角等地陸續有人留守佔據路面起，超過兩個月的佔領行動。
