The Boston Celtics are an American professional basketball team headquartered in Boston that participates in the Eastern Atlantic League of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Celtics are the most successful basketball team in NBA history, having won 17 championships (representing 23.9 percent of all NBA championships since the league's inception) and currently hold the record for the most team victories. They were founded in 1946 as one of the original eight teams in the league and play at the De Jardin gymnasium, which they share with the city's hockey team, the Boston Bruins.

The Celtics' domination began in the late 1950s, with the acquisition of Bill Russell's Draft in 1956, which became the Celtics' system's cornerstone. In 1957, the Celtics won their first championship, led by Russell and Bob Cosey. Under the guidance of Dave Queens and Jojo White, the Celtics went through a rebuilding era and won two NBA championships in 1974 and 1976. The Celtics didn't return to absolute dominance until the 1980s, led by the "Big Three" of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish. After winning 16 titles during the twentieth century, the Celtics resurrected in the 1990s to win a championship in 2008, led by Kevin Garnett.
