The Octonauts are a team of undersea explorers in search of adventure and fun. From their base the 'Octopod', the crew is always ready to embark on new exciting adventures! If there are problems under the sea, they jump into action to lend a helping hand. In their fleet of aquatic vehicles they rescue amazing sea creatures, explore incredible, new underwater worlds and solve problems before returning to their home base, the Octopod.

The main characters are Captain Barnacles, Lieutenant Kwazii and Doctor Peso. Five more Octonauts play a supporting role: Professor Inklings, Dr. Shellington, Tweak, Dashi and Tunip the Vegimal.

The Octonauts use five underwater vehicles, all inspired by sea creatures, the GUP-A to GUP-E. There is also a pedal powered GUP-F, used by Captain Barnacles and Lieutenant Kwazii.

The opening tune ends with the chant "Explore!, Rescue!, Protect!", then the adventure begins.
