All of the games feature players with some type of stick trying to knock an object into a net. Except for rare situations, the net will always be guarded by a defending player, usually called a goalie.

There are variations of hockey for men, women and children that contain differing amounts of physicality and require different athletic skills.

Hockey is a team sport, where the aim is to use the stick to shoot the ball into the opponent’s goal. Even though hockey is one of biggest field sports in the world (surpassed only by soccer and cricket), it is not well known in Denmark.

In Denmark hockey is played outdoors in the summer, and indoor in the winter. And even though there are big differences between the two types of hockey, both are fast paced and involves good physical workout.

Hockey is not a contact sport and is more about technique and team work than raw strength.

The length of the stick is measured in inches and a normal stick is between 36 and 38 inches long (equal to approx. 90-97 cm). The stick has a flat and a rounded side, and it is only permitted to touch the ball using the flat side.

The stick is either made of wood with kevlar or fibreglass reinforcements, or made completely of so-called carbon fibre composite materials. The ball is the size of a tennisball, but made of compact plastic and is quite heavy.
