"Maratin Iden" (in the Soviet pre-war periodicals, the transcription "Martin Iden" was used) - Jack London's novel. For the first time it was printed in the journal Pacific Manlis in 1908-1909 and already in 1909 it was published as a separate book in the Macmillan Company publishing house.

The novel takes place at the beginning of the 20th century in Oakland (California, USA). Martin Eden is a working guy, a sailor, coming from the bottom, about 21 years old, accidentally gets acquainted with Ruth Morse - a girl from a wealthy bourgeois family.

Falling in love with her at first sight and getting impressed by high society, Martin, wanting to become worthy of Ruth, actively takes up self-education. Ruth, seeing in Martin "savage," takes patronage over his endeavors.

Martin learns that magazines pay decent royalties to authors who print them, and decides to make a career as a writer. Besides, he is sure that he can write much better than those whose works publish literary magazines.

Martin makes a program for self-improvement, working on his own language and pronunciation, reads a lot of books. Based on his life experience, he begins to write poetry and prose and send them to print.

Strong health and unbending will move him to the goal. Martin leads a poor way of life, does not sleep enough and keeps on casual earnings. The hero becomes more attached to Ruth.

Between the young people lies a huge social abyss, but they have mutual sympathy for each other. At first the Ruth family does not object to their acquaintance (their daughter is already 24 years old, but she is not yet married).

Over time, Eden becomes an experienced writer. Months and years go by, but none of his serious works of the publishing house want to print. Do not bring success and his "handicraft" works, humorous poems and articles, which, as he is sure, must necessarily have been printed.

Ruth is attracted to Martin, frightened and embarrassed by him, eventually realizes that he is in love. Her mother and father perceive their daughter's choice with disapproval.

However, it is decided not to oppose the betrothal openly. Nevertheless, they try in every possible way to present Martin in the eyes of Ruth unworthy of her. They invite many young people from high society to take part in the house.
