Sunset time is defined in astronomy as the time when the trailing edge of the sun's disk disappears below the horizon. The path of light rays from the Sun's setting is greatly distorted near the horizon due to atmospheric refraction, making sunset appear to occur when the sun's disk is already about one diameter below the horizon. Sunset is different from twilight, which is the time when the sky becomes pitch black, which occurs when the sun is about eighteen degrees below the horizon. The period between sunset and twilight is called twilight.

Locations north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle experience no sunset or sunrise at least one day a year, when the polar day or polar night remains continuous for 24 hours.
