Metalcore or metallic core is an extensive fusion genre that is a blend of extreme metal and hardcore punk. Metalcore music puts its emphasis on breakdowns, which are intense, slow passages that are conducive to slamdancing or moshing. Early bands like Hogan's Heroes, Integrity, and Earth Crisis were distinctly into hardcore punk, while later bands like Underoath, All That Remains, The Devil Wears Prada, Killswitch Engage, Trivium, Bullet for My Valentine, and As I Lay Dying has a strong inclination towards metal. Sepultura and Pantera influenced later bands and the additional advancement of metalcore. Subgenres include mathcore, deathcore, and melodic metalcore.

Typical instruments used in Metalcore music are double-bass drums, bass guitar, and electric guitar. Screamed vocals are common, but recent Metalcore bands combine screamed vocals with clean vocals.
