God Almighty forbids Muslims to eat a donkey. Because of its impurity, it was proven that the Prophet - may God bless him and grant him peace - ordered the companions in the Battle of Khaybar not to eat from it. Because it is filthy due to its eating of excrement - that is, dung -, as it was proven on the authority of Anas bin Malik - may God be pleased with him - that he said: (The herald of the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, called out that God and His Messenger forbid you from donkey meat, because it is an abomination, so fill it up and the pots boil over with it). The Messenger - may God bless him and grant him peace - told the Companions - may God be pleased with them - to fill the pots that contain donkey meat - that is, to throw all the donkey meat in the pots on the ground -؛ It is strictly forbidden to eat donkey meat.

Some scholars said that the Prophet - may God bless him and grant him peace - prohibited it in Khaybar due to a special circumstance, which is the fear of its annihilation due to the large number of what was slaughtered from it. That is, it was not included in the division of the booty, and taking from the booty before it was divided is forbidden according to Sharia. It was also forbidden to eat it. Because people take it for decoration and to ride on it and move around with it, as God Almighty said: (And horses, mules, and donkeys, so that you may ride them as an adornment).
