To use the CopCast software, police departments must set up their own CopCast Server software either on-premises, or on a secured cloud server. Once the server software is installed, authorized users can download the CopCast app onto their Android smartphones. Only smartphones that are either issued or whitelisted by police departments can access their system.
There is evidence that use of body-worn cameras (with safeguards) in policing can contribute towards the “de-escalation” of tensions between civilians and law enforcement officials, and moderate interactions between law enforcement officials and community members.
The Igarape Institute has been developing CopCast since 2013 to improve police accountability and citizen trust in police. CopCast consists of an open-source software that turns smartphones into body-worn cameras.
