The khimar is one of many types of veils or head coverings worn by Muslim women. Wearing a khimar or niqab is common in Middle Eastern, Asian and Arab cultures. The khimar allows the shoulders and arms a full range of motion yet it protects the wearer from the sun's rays and nonconsensual viewing. A square scarf or pashmina is necessary to wear this style.

Khimar and hijab is different. Hijab is a headscarf that is secured around the head covering the neck, hair and entire head except for the face. It usually reaches to the shoulders. And Khimar is A long piece of cloth that drapes from the head all the way down to the elbows, hands, knees or feet (depending on what length you choose).

The use of Khimar is usually with another thing where the Khimar is the possession. A particular thing’s Khimar is anything that covers it. Recently, the use of this word has almost always been in the context of covering the body. Any piece of cloth that is used in some way or the other to cover the head is referred to as Khimar. What makes it different to a Hijab is that although hijab is covering the body in general, Khimar is something that particularly covers the head. Some groups however go on further to describe it as something that covers the head, forehead and the neck. Note that none of hijab or Khimar covers the face.

Here is how to wear khimar:

Hold the scarf above your head with one end in each hand and center it.

Lay one of the edges across your forehead just above your eyebrows.

Tuck the remaining fabric on each side behind each ear. Use hair barrettes or bobby pins to hold the fabric in place, if desired.

Allow the sides of the square khimar to fall along your cheeks. Adjust the folds to prevent bulkiness.

Place your hands on each side of your head and slide them down to your chin. Connect the scarf where your wrists meet each other.

Pin the fabric together with a decorative fabric bow pin, or use a safety pin to connect it inside and underneath the fabric to hide the pin.
