Land Der Berge, Land Am Strome (Country of mountains, countries of rivers)

This song is the anthem of Austria since 1947. The melody is Mozart and dates from 1791. Before 1945, Austria had a hymn composed by Haydn, but as this melody was taken by the 3rd Reich, the Austrian government after the war, it would be a provocation to take it back. A contest was organized to write the lyrics that will accompany the melody of Mozart. It was the writer Paula von Preradovic who won it.

His lyrics are extremely neutral and refer to traditional values of Austria in the first verse: nature (mountains, fields, rivers), catholicism (cathedrals), work (hammers), arts (the beautiful) . There is also an allusion to the many Austrian personalities who have marked history (homeland of great sons), as well as a look towards the future (empire of the future)
