The story takes place in 1922, during the Roaring Twenties, the post-World War I prosperous time in the United States. Described as the "ironic tale of life on Long Island at a time when gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession," it received critical acclaim. In it Mr. Fitzgerald was at his best...his "ability to catch the flavor of a period, the fragrance of a night, a snatch of old song". The book is widely regarded as a "Great American Novel" and a literary classic, capturing the essence of an era and the post-war "carefree madness" of a nation hungry for life.
