Volvo Construction Equipment is renowned for its fuel-efficient machines, but nothing demonstrates the company’s environmental consciousness so much as the decision by Sweden’s famous Icehotel to use Volvo machines to construct the building they hope will eventually become carbon negative. Spearheading the company’s constant search for innovative solutions is the design team led by Director of Design Sidney Levy, who explains the collaborative efforts involved in looking for new ideas and prototypes, the latest of which were unveiled at the Xploration Forum held in Eskilstuna, Sweden, in September. Volvo CE nurtures a close relationship with its customers, the philosophy being to not only provide customers with the products and services they need but also further refine them in cooperation with clients. An article highlighting the use of the Volvo Co-Pilot tablet and its Load Assist app on machines in a quarry in Sweden demonstrates the interdependence of the company and its clients. Volvo CE also hosts regular meetings with key suppliers – a further opportunity to gain valuable feedback about the company’s products and services. Every second construction machine in the world is rented, according to Volvo CE’s biggest customer worldwide, which gives companies the opportunity to rent its fleet of Volvo machines by the hour. Other articles in this issue from Peru and China further illustrate the diversity of the markets that Volvo CE serves, reflected in the make-up of the company itself, which employs people of many different nationalities, ages and gender.
