Barisal district was created up with Barisal Sadar, Barguna, Jhalakati, Pirojpur and Bhola subdivisions. In 1984, of these subdivisions got the standing of districts, and therefore the space of the larger Barisal district was reduced. Later in 1993, Barisal has been declared as a division with six neighboring districts – Barguna, Bhola, Jhalakathi, Pirojpur, Potuakhali, and Barisal.
