INTRODUCTION

The Plateau State Hospitals’ Management Board was first established as the Plateau State Health Service Management Board under Plateau State Edict No. Iof 1978 but with the transfer of Primary Health Care of the Local Government Councils in fulfillment of the three tier National Health Care System in 1989 it assumed its present legal status by amended Edict No. 15 of 1989.

FUNCTIONS OF THE BOARD

The following are the main functions of Hospitals Management Board as spelt out in the edict;

• To manage, administer, control all hospitals, specialist, medical nursing and surgical services, established and controlled by the State Government.

• To ensure that the standard of treatment and care provided for patients in the hospitals is of highest standard.

• To establish such clinics, laboratories research and other institutions as the Board considers necessary for the efficient functioning of the hospitals.

• The Planning and development of the hospitals and specialist services in the state and

• To collaborate with the local health authorities and their respective health committee to ensure close integration and continuity of services from peripheral units (under the Local Health Authority) to the referral units which are administered by the board.

• The duty of operating the hospitals shall include the duty of providing proper course of instruction (including, clinical instruction) and the Board may perform such duties by arranging for medical, nursing and other paramedical employees of the Board to attend courses of instructions at institutions not controlled by the Board.

MANAGEMENT

The Board has Eight (8) departments namely;

• Administration

• Accounts

• Planning Research and Statistics

• Medical Services

• Nursing Services

• Pharmaceutical Services

• Medical Laboratory Services

• Dental Services

Each is being headed by a Director. These Directors form the management committee headed by the Chief Medical Director and is responsible for the day to day running of the Board and who reports to the Board of Directors.

There are other standing committees that are set up by the management committee to see to the special aspect of the day to day running of the board e.g Medical Advisory Committee, Drug Purchasing Committee, Disciplinary Committee e.t.c. The Hospitals, each has a management team headed by a Medical Superintendent who is expected to report to the Chief Medical Director.
