SALALIHINI SANDHESHAYA

The Salalihini Sandeshaya was written by Thotagamuwe Sri Rahula Thera, who was considered as one of the brightest poets of the Kotte era.

A poem written as a surname or a message sent by a bird or by others is called "Sandesha Poetry". The oldest Sinhala poem we have is the Mayura Sandesha poem written during the Gampola era. Sandeshava poetry reached its golden age during the Kotte era. It then advanced to the modern age through the Seethawaka period.

Salihini Sandeshaya has been praised by the literary men as Rahal Thero's greatest poetry. It is written in the form of an appeal to Lord Vibhishana of Kelaniya to grant the princely son, Lokanatha or Ulakuda, the youngest daughter of King Parakumba VI.

This is a lyric poem composed of samudrajosha vrita, an elaborate 18-syllable lyric poem, with 108 poems, a simple, smooth vocabulary of novel ideas, parables, and beauty.
