Black Lagoon (Japanese: Hepburn: Burakku Ragūn) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Rei Hiroe. It has been published in Shogakukan's Monthly Sunday Gene-X since 2002, and ten volumes collected have been released so far. It was later adapted into an anime television series by Madhouse, which aired from April to June 2006 for twelve episodes. The second season, the subtitle "The Second Barrage", runs for twelve weeks starting October 2, 2006. Five original animated video series, Roberta's Blood Trail, was released from July 2010 to June 2011.

The story follows a team of pirate mercenaries known as Lagoon Company, who smuggled goods in and around the oceans of Southeast Asia in the early to mid 1990s. [2] Their operating base is located in the fictional port city of Roanapur in southeastern Thailand (somewhere in Amphoe Mueang Trat district, possibly on the north / northeast plain of Ko Chang island or on the island itself). [3] The island is home to Yakuza, Triad, Russian mafia, Colombian cartel, Italian mafia, and various pickpockets, thugs, mercenaries, thieves, prostitutes, assassins, and armed men of all sorts. They transport goods on a 80-foot (24 m) Elco-type boat of Black Lagoon (24 m). Lagoon Company does business with various clients, but has a very friendly relationship with Russian Hotel Moscow's crime syndicate. The team takes on various missions - which may involve heavy firefights, hand-to-hand combat, and sea battles - at various locations in Southeast Asia, even to Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam. Lagoon Company members spend most of their rest time at The Yellow Flag, a bar in Roanapur that is often destroyed in crossfire.
