Shure Aonic 5 GUIDE

The wired headphone jack is a dying breed, especially at the budget end of the market, but manufacturers with a rich history in this category don't seem ready to pull the plug next, especially when it comes to more premium excellence.

Take Shure, for example. They have years of experience in the world of in-ear monitors, and a number of five-star ratings for their earbuds indicate that the company knows a thing or two about making a decent pair. So, can we add the Aonic 5 to that list?

Priced at 449 EUR ($499, AU$879), these earbuds are the premium in-car prizes in Shure's Aonic range. On paper, papers depend well on their own designs and are suitable. The Aonic 5 uses three high-resolution density drivers in a dual speaker and single speaker configuration.

You can actually get a closer look at the inner workings of the buds through the clear section of each earphone. It works as a window and made a welcome change to the dull black plastic, and it's also very sturdy, as it tests across our test chambers. The Aonic 5 gets different colors - matte black, glossy red and crystal clear.

Uses both headphones and the MMCX connector for headphone and companion cables. This makes it easy to make adjustments to Shure's optional Spa Cable Fit (£175, AU179, AU309), which can turn the Aonic 5 into a pair of wireless earbuds.

The headphone cable also includes simple volume and playback controls and a master switch for controls to work with iOS or Android devices.

Anyone who has watched or used Shure earphones in the past will not be shocked to find out that you had to thread a headphone cable over both ears. They require a little hands-off but are securely in place.

As you'd expect, Shure offers plenty of preparation (literally!) to help in trying to get the perfect seal. You have three different sizes of Comply Professional P-Series mesh foam tips, three sizes of foam tips, and three sizes of silicone eartips and one to be sure. Plus, isolation is generally excellent (Shure claims to block up to 37dB of noise) and the tips I eventually eliminated (the more rounded design) were more comfortable including for listening sessions.
