Szeged Panteon

Enjoy a short walk under the arcades and listen to some of the most famous Hungarian music and poems!

The Szeged Pantheon application was developed to introduce one of the most beautiful sights of the county. This little Hall of Fame has paramount cultural and touristic significance, as the statues and reliefs commemorate the most famous Hungarian scientists, artist and other iconic figures.

The main body of the Pantheon’s artworks was made up of the portraits found in the bequest of the sculptor Alajos Stróbl ; some other statues came from the National Pantheon collection of the Hungarian National Museum; and finally they added some pieces by other artists from the beginning of the 20th century. The collection was opened on the 25th of October, 1930 with a spectacular inauguration. In the last few years, some contemporary works have enriched the collection, so the hall beneath the arcades is now fully occupied with 106 pieces. The city of Szeged takes pride in caring for the collection, as it is an attractive sight enhancing the intellectual status of the city.

The aim of our application is to guide visitors and to introduce the historically important personalities pictured in the statues. The Szeged Pantheon application also functions as an art history source, as it deals with the artists, and illustrates the technique of Hungarian portrait- and memorial sculpture.

Audio files enrich the descriptions about Hungarian artists and bring visitors closer to the artworks. Users can listen to works of e. g. Liszt, Bartók or Petőfi.

The walk gives us a guide to the 25 highlighted statues of the 106 which are all marked on the map outline. All the descriptions of the highlighted statues have an audio version.
