In Greater China, Chinese New Year is a major holiday and has strongly influenced the lunar new year celebrations of China's neighbouring cultures, including the Korean New Year (seol), the Tết of Vietnam, and the Losar of Tibet. It is also celebrated in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines, and Mauritius, as well as many in North America and Europe.
Chinese New Year celebration is always an exhilarating, joyous, and colourful occasion. The two weeks long festival is synonymous with family gatherings, fireworks and firecrackers, traditional lion dances with drums, dragon dances, feasts, red envelopes or the hong bao, people fill their homes with red Chinese New Year decorations, Chinese New Year flowers and fruit to promote wealth, longevity, good fortune, and happiness.
Symbolic activities are carried out, such as a thorough clean of the house before the New Year starts, ancestor worship and Yu Sheng or the Prosperity Toss on the New Year’s eve, Shou Sui, Bai Nian, giving Red Packet or Hong Bao,
The 15th day or the Lantern Festival (Yuan Xiao festival), marks the end of the New Year celebrations and also coincides with the first full moon of the new lunar year. During the night, congregations of flying, lit, paper lanterns are commonly seen in public places at lantern fairs, which are usually held at temples.
