Beach or coast is a geographical form that consists of sand, and is found in coastal areas of the sea. The coastal area is the boundary between land and sea waters. The coastal area is different from the coast although the two are interrelated. The length of this coastline is measured around the entire coast which is the territorial area of ​​a country.

According to the 2008 UN correction, Indonesia is the country with the fourth longest coastline in the world after the United States (USA), Canada and Russia. Indonesia's coastline is recorded at 95,181 km

The coastline is the boundary between the sea and land at the time of the highest tide. The sea line can change due to abrasion, which is the erosion of the coast by the impact of ocean waves which causes a decrease in land area.

There are several important steps that can be taken in securing the coastline such as breakwaters and the development of vegetation on the coast.

To overcome the abrasion/scouring of the shoreline from the waves/waves, a breakwater can be used which functions to reflect back the wave energy. Various ways are taken to break the waves, including using a tetrapod stack made of concrete at a certain distance from the shoreline.

Mangroves can help overcome waves and are also beneficial for animal life and a breeding ground for certain fish. Mangrove forests in most of the North coast have been lost due to human activities, which in turn will erode the coast.

Coral reefs are also natural breakwaters, so they need to be conserved and developed to maintain coastlines.
