Over Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trism
Vertalingen van de smaragdgroene tablet of Smaragdine-tafel van Hermes Trismegistus.
This app contains multiple translations and English versions of the Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus. Also known as the Smaragdine Table, this intriguing work is an ancient alchemical text revealing the transmutation of primal matter into alchemical gold, a process otherwise known as the "Operation of the Sun" and considered to be the highest and most spiritual work of alchemy. It is considered a foundational text for the study of both inner and outer (or internal and external) alchemy, especially in the Western Hermetic traditions. Some scholars postulate that the tablet's true origins may lie within the traditions of Chinese Alchemy, particularly in the art and technologies of early metallurgy and chemistry, as metallurgy and mysticism were inexorably tied together in the ancient world.
The oldest documentable source for the text is the Kitab Sirr al-Asrar, an Arabic compendium of wisdom for rulers, which purports to be a letter from Aristotle to Alexander the Great. The earliest extant editions claim to be based on a 9th-century Arabic translation of a Syriac translation of the lost Greek original. This work was later translated into Latin as the "Secretum Secretorum" (Secret of Secrets) ca. 1140 CE. However, another version of the Emerald Tablet has been found appended to the Kitab Sirr al-Khaliqa wa San`at al-Tabi`a (Book of the Secret of Creation and the Art of Nature) which may have been written as early as 650 CE. Mythically, this book was said to have been discovered by Alexander the Great in the tomb of Hermes, or underneath the Great Pyramid of Giza, where it was hidden by Egyptian priests.
What is Hermeticism?
Hermeticism is a religious, philosophical, and esoteric tradition based primarily upon writings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus ("Thrice Great Hermes"). It emerged in Late Antiquity, in parallel with early Christianity, Gnosticism, Neoplatonism, the Chaldaean Oracles, and late Orphic and Pythagorean literature. These writings have greatly influenced the Western esoteric and magical tradition, and were considered to be of great importance during the European Renaissance. Hermeticism claims descent from a "prisca theologia", a doctrine that affirms the existence of a single, true theology that is present in all religions and was given by God to man in primordial antiquity. Hermes Trismegistus is sometimes seen as a syncretism of the Greek god Hermes (Mercury) and the Egyptian god Thoth (Djehuty). He is also presented as a wise philosopher-sage and Egyptian priest.
