PIC-CHE

Our app is called Pic-C.H.E, which stands for Picture - Chinese or Cantonese to Hokkien to English. It is also wordplay, reading "Picture". It allows users to pick up commonly used words and phrases, the elderly picking up English and Chinese, and the younger generation picking up Hokkien and Cantonese, the two most commonly known dialects in Singapore, to bridge the communication gap between the younger and silver generation. There are no apps on Google Play, and very few on the apple app store that provide a Hokkien to English translation. Furthermore, the already very few apps that are on the app store are not user-friendly, and they are not very accurate either. Quite a number of elderly are not able to converse in English, therefore, these apps, or even a Hokkien to English dictionary which although is accurate, will not help the elderly pick up some English phrases. We aim to fix this, by allowing the users to pick up the words through pictorial form. Pictures are universally understood, therefore the elderly would be able to pick up English or Chinese phrases. At the same time, the younger generation would find it easier to pick up a few phrases in Hokkien. The Chinese phrases can also allow the elderly who know Chinese, but do not know Hokkien, to pick up both Hokkien and English to converse with both the younger generation and the Elderly who only know Hokkien. The app is mobile, so the younger generation can learn Hokkien or cantonese phrases on the go, or can use the app as a reference, whenever they need to when conversing with the older generation.
