In a world often driven by financial metrics, it’s easy to overlook another vital form of wealth: Social Production. Social production is the glue that holds societies together, it gives people a sense of belonging and purpose, and connectedness that fosters mental health, it supports our ability to be productive in the formal economy, it improves environmental wellbeing, and it gives us surge capacity to mobilize effectively in times of crisis. Social production includes unpaid activities such as volunteering and charity work, caregiving, mentorship, and various forms of community involvement. These are the unsung efforts that sustain and enhance the vitality of our communities and make us more resilient as a nation.

**What is Mental Wealth?**

Mental Wealth is a new measure that combines the value of economic production (i.e. GDP) and Social Production. It provides us with an overarching metric for understanding national prosperity that isn't simply based on economic growth. It is called Mental Wealth because it acknowledges the important role our mental health and collective wellbeing play in driving our economic and social prosperity.

**Why Mental Wealth Matters**

The concept of Mental Wealth gives nations a vision for the future that extends beyond the ambition of growing GDP. In valuing more holistically the contributions people make across their lives to both the economy and society, we can help shift the focus away from policies that undermine mental health, social cohesion, and environmental wellbeing and more towards policies that achieve greater balance between economic and social prosperity. In measuring and regularly reporting on the Mental Wealth of the nation, we can make a more compelling case for investments that will create environments where young people, families, and communities can thrive, and which support healthy aging.
