Unpacking is a game based on the familiar feeling of removing belongings from boxes and arranging them in a new house. You're invited to build a happy living environment while learning clues about the life you're unpacking. For the most part, we intended to create some friction and a sense of struggle while allowing the rest to happen naturally. As a result, we'd occasionally design a shelf that wasn't quite big enough for all of one type of object, forcing the player to decide what should go on another shelf. In many cases, the kitchen drawers could only fit everything if everything was rotated to fit like a jigsaw. Other surfaces, on the other hand, had plenty of room. We could remind the player that there were some restrictions by dropping in small areas of difficulty that were often quite situational. These enabled players to find their own way.
