पीएम ने अपने पहले कार्यकाल में प्रधानमंत्री जन धन योजना (Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana) की शुरुआत की थी. इस स्कीम को तहत देश के गरीब लोगों का खाता जीरो बैलेंस पर बैंक, पोस्ट ऑफिस, किसी भी नेशनल बैंक और कुछ प्राइवेट बैंकों में भी खोला जाता है. इन खातों से आधार कार्ड लिंक होगा. इसके बाद उन्हें 6 महीने बाद ओवरड्राफ्ट सुविधा, 2 लाख रुपये के दुर्घटना बीमा कवर, लाइफ कवर के साथ कई सुविधाएं दी जाती हैं. जन धन खाता योजना के तहत अब तक देशभर में लगभग 38 ​करोड़ से ज्यादा खाते खुल चुके हैं
