Moose Sounds

The largest of all the different types of deer is the moose. They are the species of living deer that are the largest in both height and weight, with elk coming in a close second. They are easily recognized by the singular appearance of their antlers. Under each moose's throat, there is a dangling fold of skin that is called a bell.

Researchers have categorized the sounds that moose make and linked those classifications to a variety of the animals' experiences and feelings. The sound of "whining" is used to attract other moose and is sometimes even used as a friendly greeting between individuals. The distress call of a moose is a loud, nasal call that is used when the animal is approached by a variety of threats, such as other moose or predators, whereas gnashing is an expression of pain or a sign of a lesser threat. Animals that are being followed by either other moose or humans will utter what is known as a "roar," which is the most intense form of vocalization possible. Moose are known to use non-vocal sounds, which are primarily used as an attractant, in their communication. Both the clashing of antlers and the scraping of the ground can entice members of the opposite gender to a particular location. Moose will use gestures in their communication not only with other conspecifics but also with potential predators. When a moose feels threatened, it will raise the guard hairs on its neck and run them down its spine.
