Rockstar broke from tradition last night. Instead of dropping another YouTube trailer, the studio announced a full-blown Netflix special called Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look. It goes live on August 27. If you've been waiting to see actual gameplay of the most anticipated game of the decade, this is the one to circle on your calendar.
The announcement landed on August 6 through Rockstar's official social channels, and the wording matters. Rockstar didn't call this "Trailer 3." The official description frames it as a "far deeper dive" into the game. Not a 90-second teaser, but something closer to a featurette. With GTA VI just over three months from its November 19 release date, this is likely the last major promotional beat before launch.
So what should you expect? Let's break it down.
When Is the GTA VI Extended Look?
The program premieres Thursday, August 27 on Netflix. Here's when it goes live in your region:
- Pacific Time (PT): 12:00 PM
- Eastern Time (ET): 3:00 PM
- UK (BST): 8:00 PM
- Central Europe (CEST): 9:00 PM
- Australia (AEST, August 28): 5:00 AM
- Beijing / Singapore (CST, August 28): 3:00 AM
Netflix subscribers can set a reminder now at netflix.com/GTAVI.
Don't have a Netflix account? No problem. The program goes up on Rockstar's official YouTube channel and the GTA VI website six hours later. That's 9:00 PM ET on August 27. Easy enough. No need to overthink it.
What Will Be in the GTA VI Extended Look?
Rockstar hasn't detailed exactly what the program covers. But the clues point to something meatier than a standard trailer, and way meatier than the typical pre-launch sizzle reel that most publishers slap together three months before release. The title itself, "An Extended Look," suggests runtime beyond the usual two-to-three-minute format. Netflix has the show listed as a 2026 action title, and the platform's description promises "an in-depth look at the next evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series." Rockstar also ended its announcement with "More to follow," hinting at additional reveals between now and the broadcast. Worth keeping an eye on.
Netflix VP of Nonfiction Series Brandon Riegg called the partnership a "first-of-its-kind collaboration" between the streamer and Rockstar. That kind of language doesn't get used for a standard trailer upload. It signals a produced program, likely mixing gameplay footage, developer commentary, and possibly a narrative tease for the Jason-and-Lucia storyline. A proper show, not just a clip.
The reasonable bet: expect extended gameplay sequences that go beyond the short clips seen in Trailers 1 and 2. The first trailer in December 2023 focused on tone and setting. Vice City's sun-soaked beaches, neon-lit streets, and the chaotic energy of Leonida.
Pure chaos.
The second trailer shifted to character dynamics between Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, the series' first playable female protagonist. This third look should finally show what the game actually plays like.
What are fans hoping to see? The wanted system overhaul, for one. Open-world interactivity (the first trailer teased everything from alligator invasions to mud-wrestling clubs). Vehicle handling. How the dual-protagonist mechanic works in practice. The official game description mentions a "robbery gone wrong" that pulls Jason and Lucia into a statewide criminal conspiracy. Expect the program to build on that thread.
One thing to manage expectations on: don't count on a GTA Online reveal. Rockstar has historically kept the single-player and online reveals separate, and GTA Online is a massive ongoing revenue driver. It'll almost certainly get its own moment closer to, or after, launch.
What We Already Know About GTA VI
Need a refresher? GTA VI launches November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-orders went live June 25 and, predictably, broke records. It's been 13 years since GTA V hit shelves. That game went on to sell over 220 million copies. Second best-selling title in history. Only Minecraft sits above it.
The story follows criminal couple Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, set in Vice City and the wider state of Leonida. Rockstar's fictionalized Florida. The first trailer became the most-watched game reveal in YouTube history within 24 hours, and the pressure on Rockstar to deliver something that lives up to thirteen years of waiting is, to put it mildly, enormous.
Not even close.
Multiple delays have pushed the game from an original 2025 window into late 2026. Rockstar cited the need for "the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve" with each postponement. The Ultimate Edition landed at $100 for the base game plus a GTA+ subscription month and exclusive content. It drew some criticism. But if history is any guide, it won't slow sales.

Where to Watch the GTA VI Extended Look
The program airs first on Netflix. You'll need an active subscription to catch the premiere at 3:00 PM ET. The show page is already live on the platform. Set your reminder if you want to watch the moment it drops.
Six hours after the Netflix premiere, the program will be freely available on:
- Rockstar Games Official YouTube Channel
- GTA VI Official Website (rockstargames.com/VI)
No paywall for the YouTube release. The six-hour Netflix exclusive window is brief enough that most international viewers will simply wake up to the YouTube upload rather than subscribing just for this. Is it the shortest platform exclusivity window in entertainment history? Some players are already joking exactly that. But it's generated exactly the kind of conversation Rockstar likely wanted.
Rockstar hasn't announced additional viewing options like co-streams or creator watch-along events. That could change. The "More to follow" note at the end of the announcement suggests we'll hear more about the program's format as August 27 approaches.
