To prevent human extinction, Shelby Forthright (Fred Willard) as CEO of Buy N Large, conducts a mass evacuation from Earth for five years over an executive spacecraft fleet named Axiom that provides every human need, and is equipped with robots that all run on automatic to serve human needs.

Hundreds of thousands of waste-breaking robot units named WALL • E were left on Earth to clean Earth. The robots are programmed to condense and accumulate electronic waste that has filled all the land on Earth, to make it easier for smelting. The pile of electronic waste has been compacted and collected by WALL • E robots, the garbage heap has been as tall as a skyscraper. However, the project was canceled because Forthright predicted that by 2110 the Earth would be too polluted and would be inhabited by humans. In 2815, approximately 700 years later, only one WALL • E was still functioning.

Centuries of life have been traversed by WALL • E, so that he has better intelligence and a sense of curiosity. He likes to collect items of interest in a pile of rubbish that fills the Earth, taking parts for his spare parts from other WALL • E that are inactive
