True Gaturamo singing live to warm up males - The species is sexually dimorphic: males are bright black with violet-blue reflections on the back, while the underside is bright yellow. On the tail the outer feathers have white spots and on the top of the head, over the beak, there is a yellow spot. Females and immature birds have a dark olive color with a lighter belly. They measure 12 cm in length, weighing 15 g.

It has a large range and has been described as a fairly common bird, although its total population has not been quantified. Thus, the species is still considered to be in a condition of little concern, but its population appears to be in decline. It is originally native to the following countries: Argentina, Brazil, French Guiana, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, Guyana, Paraguay and Suriname.
