SMC Hospital

Way back in 1978 Dr P M Varkey took the initiativechairman and an elite group of philanthropists and businessman met to discuss the setting up of a hospital specializing in cardiac cases. As a prelude, they formed a society namely the Trichur Heart Foundation with Dr.P.M.Varkey, FRCP as its President The society subsequently sponsored the Sun Medical and Research Centre, the first investor owned, multi disciplinary Super Speciality High Tech Corporate Hospital with Dr. Varkey as its President and Chief Promoter. The project was conceived with an idea of establishing an institution of international standards to provide excellence in treatment, nursing care, service and cleanliness.

The Company was floated in 1985 and the foundation stone was laid by his Holiness Pope John Paul on 7th Feb. 1986. Visualized to house 500 beds and other supporting facilities the construction was started in 1988.
