The second grade science program focuses on the development of the students' skills for making observations, measurements and comparisons, and using this information to make predictions.

A scientific approach to inquiry and problem solving is stressed.

Second grade science experiences include :

+ Light and Shadows :

investigations of the behavior of light—students identify sources of light, the reflection of light, the absorption of light, and experiment with the relationships between source, object and the resulting shadow

+ Weather :

observations and investigations regarding how weather changes from day to day and week to week—students learn about temperature, precipitation, wind, cloud cover, and measure and record information about weather using tools that include thermometers and wind vanes

+ Minibeasts :

classification of living things and recognition of stages of development—study and observation of small animals such as insects, and investigate their huge populations, features, behaviors, and learn about the needs of organisms

+ Digging Into Soil :

investigation of the role and importance of soil. Students classify soil types, recognize the interdependence of soil, plants, and animals.

Experiments regarding soil properties will be conducted
