Bougainvillea is a genus of evergreen plants of the family Niktaginovye. Distributed in South America.

The genus is named after Louis Antoine de Bougainville the French traveler the leader of the first French round-the-world expedition a member of the Paris Academy of Sciences.

Representatives of the genus evergreen twisted bushes sometimes low trees. Plants in nature reach a height of 5 m. Leaves are alternate with integral edges.

The flowers are small, hardly noticeable they are enclosed in brightly colored usually purple broad bracts which determine the decorative value of representatives of this genus.
