Plan the size of your finished filet crochet object and draw the perimeter measurements on the graph paper. For example, if you want a 5-inch by 5-inch finished piece, draw the same dimensions along the lines of the graph paper.

Decide what design you want to incorporate into the mesh pattern and draw a rough outline within the perimeter you drew. For example, if you want a heart that takes up most of the square, draw the rough outline so that the heart does not touch the perimeter of the finished piece.

Color in the squares of the graph paper that will be filled to make the shape. In keeping with the heart example, for a hollow heart shape, fill in the squares along the rough-drawn heart shape.
