Tafsir Al-Qur'an (Arabic: تفسير القرآن) is the science of understanding and interpreting those concerned with the Koran and its contents serve as mubayyin (giving explanation), explaining the meaning and content of the Qur'an, especially regarding verses that are not understood and their meaning is vague. The need of Muslims for the interpretation of the Koran, so that its meanings can be fully and comprehensively understood, is fundamental in carrying out the commands of Allah (God in Islam) according to His will.

Understanding and interpreting the Qur'an requires not only knowledge of Arabic, but also various kinds of knowledge concerning the Qur'an and its contents. This knowledge to understand the Qur'an is called Ushul Tafsir or commonly known as Ulumul Qur'an (the sciences of the Qur'an). There are three forms of interpretation, namely Tafsîr bil ma'tsûr, at-tafsîr bir ra'yi, and tafsir isyari, with four methods, namely ijmâli, tahlîli, muqârin, and maudhû'i. Meanwhile, in terms of more diverse features, there are literary styles of language, fiqh, theology, philosophy, Sufism, ilmiyah, and social-cultural literary styles.

The attempt to interpret the Qur'an has been started since the time of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ himself. 'Ali ibn Abi Thâlib (d. 40 H),' Abdullah ibn 'Abbâs (d. 68 H),' Abdullah Ibn Mas'ûd (d. 32 H) and Ubay ibn Ka'ab (d. 32 H) are at among the friends who were well known for interpreting the verses of the Koran more than the others.

The Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad through the Angel Jibril in Arabic with all kinds of rich languages. In it there is an explanation of the basics of aqidah, the rules of the Shari'a, the principles of behavior, guiding people to a straight path in thinking, and doing charity. However, Allah SWT does not guarantee the details in these matters so that many recitations of the Koran require interpretation, let alone often use short sentence structures but broad meaning. In just a few lafazh, many meanings can be gathered. For this reason, an explanation is needed in the form of an interpretation of the Qur'an.
