Best World of Warcraft classes and specialties for solo players
Maybe your usual gaming squad isn’t joining you on this one. We got you covered!

World of Warcraft still manages to be one of the biggest MMOs since it’s launch all the way back in 2004. With new players dropping in very often, you might be thinking of joining in on the fun, but maybe your friends aren’t into the genre. Or you just rather go at it alone to see what all the fuss is about. In this article, I wanted to focus on those solo players to let them know they can still play this game with almost no socializing and give them a list of the best classes for playing World of Warcraft solo.

But let’s be honest — not every part of WoW is fun solo. Whether it's gearing, mythics, or just some brutal raid mechanics, doing it all without backup can get frustrating. Services like Skycoach.gg are out there for exactly that reason. Real players, legit clears, and it’s saved more than a few folks from burnout. Worth knowing about, even if you don’t think you’ll ever need it. Some players like the challenge of doing everything on their own — others just want to get to the good stuff. For those leaning toward the latter, Skycoach has become a go-to in the community. They offer raid support, coaching, and other services, all run by people who actually play at a high level. It’s not a shortcut, it’s just another tool in the toolbox if you need it.

What makes them great?

So what makes a class great for playing solo? Well, there are a lot of boxes these classes have to tick for them to be Solo-friendly.

  • Sustainability: either some form of self-healing or ways to avoid death.
  • Mobility: Has the ability to get out of dangerous situations and move around the enemy quickly.
  • Easy to use: The class or spec has an easy rotation to learn and isn’t overall complex.
  • Utilities: the class has something like pets, self-buffs or shields. Basically anything that can help them in battle besides a direct attack.

There are plenty of specialties (specs) that do either some or most of these, so let’s see what we have!

Beast mastery hunter

Hunter is already regarded as the best class to play solo, and beast master only solidifies this. This specialty has a pet that can act like a tank, allowing you to disengage if you need to or flank to attack with their very strong ranged damage. You’re also able to deal damage on the move, further allowing you to keep distance with the enemy. Remember to heal your pet as well because if they go down you will be in a lot of trouble. This class is very good for new players thanks to their very easy to learn rotation.

Feral Druid

These are a bit harder to use but also, thanks to their very diverse kit, they’re able to play solo very well. They can transform into various animals to deal with different situations. You can use stealth to sneak around groups of enemies and head to quest objectives, or use it to open an attack with a guaranteed critical strike. Or you can use their cat form to deal a lot of damage over time to your enemies with great speed. The bear form makes you pretty tanky to deal with lots of enemies attacking you at once. The ribbon putting this whole package together is their ability to self-heal. Solidifying the Feral Druid as a great pick for solo players.

Protection paladin

Don’t let the “protection” in the spec fool you into thinking this class needs other players to protect while they deal the damage. Protection Paladins deal a lot of damage for a tank, and they’re almost unkillable in solo content thanks to their ability to self-heal and high area damage. Their spell “divine shield” grants them complete immunity to damage for 8 seconds. Doesn’t sound like a lot if you haven’t played the game, but anyone with a bit of experience will tell you this is a huge deal. If that wasn’t enough, their plate armor grants huge amounts of defense.

Demonology Warlock

Just because you play solo doesn’t mean you have to fight alone. Warlock was already a pretty good solo class, but Demonology adds the ability to summon undead NPCs to fight for you. Some summons can even act as tanks and has both self-heal and self revive. This class might be the one with the highest sustainability in this list, making it a great candidate. It’s recommended you use the voidwalker, your tank summon, to attract the tankier enemies and use your undead army to attack the rest!

Shadow Priest

Shadow Priests offer strong self-healing through damage, good AoE, and great utility. They might feel a bit slower than other specs early on, but they shine in longer fights and solo content. They can even give fear to their enemies to force them to disengage. Giving you some time to escape or rethink your fighting strategy.

Blood death knight

These are tanks that have some of the strongest self-heal. As they heal trough dealing damage to the enemy. Abilities like “death strike” heal you based on recently received damage. Making it an excellent tool for survival. They can also pool multiple enemies to them. Basically, the more you get hit the more you can heal yourself, and if that doesn’t sound like a recipe for survival, I don’t know what does. You will see your healthbar bouncing between being almost full and almost empty very often. The trick is keeping calm and concentrating on your rotation.

Elemental Shaman

This class and spec specialize in dealing high ranged elemental damage with some AoE options. They also have an earth elemental they can summon to become a tank and give you some breathing room. The ability “Ghost Wolf” transforms you into a wolf, granting you high mobility. They can also self-heal, furthering their survivability.

Frost Mage

The most controversial entry in this list. Mages are very much glass cannons, being able to deal high amounts of damage with their flashy spells, but they’re not good at taking damage themselves. This is where Frost Mages come in, they’re able to slow their enemies down thanks to their icy magic and they excel in kiting and crowd control, allowing you to avoid taking damage altogether. Their ability to summon a water elemental also creates a distraction so that you can deal massive amounts of burst and AOE damage.

In conclusion

You don’t need anyone else to play World of Warcraft at all. The game gives you plenty of resources and options when it comes to creating a character that makes this game feel like an RPG rather than an MMORPG. However, just because you can play alone doesn’t mean you should swear off all socializing in the game. Some of the best memories you make are while interacting with the community. If you’re just starting, there’s always people willing to teach new players what to do. However, if that’s not your cup of tea, and you just want to experience the excellent story that Blizzard crafted for the fans without talking to anyone, you absolutely can!
