When we travel to Indonesia, especially in Java, it is difficult to avoid Indonesian batik. Java is the place where the batik industry is well developed. There are several popular areas as the center of batik, such as Pekalongan, Yogyakarta, Solo, Cirebon, West Java and East Java. Each region recognizes a different design. In Cirebon, for example, batik from areas heavily influenced by the culture of the coast. Batik Cirebon popular as "coastal", which introduces the sky and water as the main pattern. Jogjakarta and Solo in contrast to New York because of their patterns strongly influenced by the court. Batik from Yogyakarta and Solo has a more complicated pattern. Most of the objects are brought flowers, leaves and animals. In the late 70s, the area was the center Solo batik dress. This area has a special area called Lawean, the area where most modern batik workshops run their operations. Now, the industry has spread to all regions in Solo along with the popularity of batik dress to the Western world.

Although there are many types of batik model, modern batik design in general is divided into two types: the geometric design and the design of non-geometric or free. Then Batik industry has increased more rapidly during the struggle for Indonesian independence. The Netherlands also has a role as a disperser batik mostly to Europe.

Based on the technique of batik making, there are five types of batik:

Batik (hand made batik)

The combination of batik (a combination of hand crafted and batik)

Batik (batik)

Printed batik (batik).

Batik pull (a combination of hand made and batik).

Among those kinds of batik, hand made batik is the most valued because of the complexity and exclusivity in design and in manufacturing.
