How do I teach my child the alphabet?

Learning the alphabet is your child's first step towards learning to write and read. 

Knowing the names of the letters is, in fact, essential to go further. If your Loulou is ready to learn his ABCs, you will know it very quickly: he will be very interested in the books you read to him, and will start asking you questions about the sounds, asking you to show him the word you have just read on the text...

Preparing to learn the alphabet

Even before learning the alphabet, you can start preparing for learning. Between the ages of 2 and 4, your child will begin to show an interest in it, even if he won't be able to remember it from scratch. To fuel his interest, you can write his first name on all his drawings, and call out the letters one by one. He will then quickly make the connection between the signs and his name!

You can also give him a beautiful alphabet book, which he can go through alone or with you. At first, read each letter and its associated word, then let your child find the right letter associated with each drawing, or vice versa.

Learning to recognize letters and sounds

Children often start learning the alphabet by their first name. As they begin to learn how to write and/or read the alphabet, you will find that they will often point out that a particular letter used in their first name is also present in a word they have seen in a book, on a poster, in a store, etc. You can encourage them by showing them the letters that are used in their first name. You can encourage him by showing him words and asking him to find the letters in his first name, then looking for names that have the same initial as his, etc. When he has mastered the exercise, you can start teaching him the sounds.

Educational tools for learning the alphabet

There are of course many alphabet books to facilitate learning, but there are also many other tools. You can easily find little rhymes, coloring pages, toys such as bricks with letters on them, etc., to help your child learn the alphabet. Finally, there are small games for computer, phone or tablets, which are interactive and can be used around the age of 5-6 years.
